In 2001, with a vision to provide quality mental healthcare to Australians around the country, Jodie Brenton started Life Resolutions. What began as a seed of an idea to make mental healthcare easily accessible to everyone, soon turned into a countrywide franchise. Today, with more than 50 practices and affiliates across Australia, Life Resolutions is ever growing. Combine that with Jodie’s many years of experience as a sales representative and you have someone who knows business inside out. Suffice it to say then, that when it comes to recruitment and hiring the right person for the job, as the Director of Life Resolutions Jodie knows a thing or two about choosing the right fit for a role.

Pro tip: The proof is in the pudding

When you’re faced with multiple candidates for a job, all equally competent and qualified, it can be tricky to zero in on the ‘right’ one. Very often, recruiters rely on instinct and that ‘gut feeling’ when making the final decision. But this is not necessarily always the right approach. Instead, apply as many tools as are at your disposal to try and find out a little more about the candidates, in order to help you make an informed decision.
Get the candidates to complete common personality profiles such as the Myer-Briggs or Big 5 profiles. Ask candidates for references and make it a practice to follow up on those references, perhaps even going the extra mile to have a chat with them personally. Next, try and give the candidates some hands-on tasks or activities to complete in order to determine their skill set and capabilities in real time. Finally, make sure to get multiple opinions from other team members and advisors before you make your decision. In the end, trust your gut, but always back it up with some research.
