What is stress

Stress is the bodies ‘fight or flight response to specific stimuli or events. This response creates physiological changes to prepare the body to quickly react to a situation. However, in modern life, stress can be caused by work, school, social and other life challenges. Stress is very common amongst Australians, 64% report that stress negatively affects their mental health. As most of the population experiences stress, access to stress management services must be easy.

The Effects of Stress

Having high levels of prolonged stress can cause high blood pressure, increased rates of obesity (due to decreasing sleep and exercise and increasing appetite), and increase chances of developing anxiety, depression and addictive behaviours. Stress has detrimental effects on one’s mental and physical wellbeing.

Decreasing Stress

Studies conducted by Harvard University have found that employing relaxation techniques can help reduces the stress response. The study sound that deep abdominal breathing, focus on soothing words, visualization of tranquil scenes and yoga can help reduce stress. Physical activity was also found to reduce stress. Additionally, the study found that seeking support decreased stress. Support can take the form of social or professional support.

Jodie Brenton has worked tirelessly to ensure that access to stress management for everyone that needs it. Mary Magalotti and our team of psychologists provide a range of services that can help with stress and a range of mental health challenges.
